Welcome to Zac Walsh Writing

My writing life began while doing graduate work at CSU East Bay, where I studied under three dynamic, generous and inspiring writers: poet Susan Gubernat (winner of the Marianne Moore Prize for Flesh), nonfiction writer Jacqueline Doyle (winner of the Black River Chapbook Competition for The Missing Girl, nominated for Pushcarts 15 times and 9 essays named as Notables in Best American Essays) and fiction writer and essayist Stephen Guiterrez (winner of The American Book Award for Live From Fresno y Los). My first story, "An End of Speaking," won the Robert V. Williams Prize for Fiction and became the title story for my first book.

My work is guided by two beliefs -- Blake's claim that the only thing that pleases God is the creation of beautiful things and Foster Wallace's sentiment that literature is intended to make us feel less alone.

Please email me if you read something here and have thoughts to share.
